Ridgemount United Church

Ridgemount United Church is a historic Protestant congregation located at 53 Main Street in Mandeville, Jamaica. It forms part of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and has been a spiritual and community hub in central Jamaica for over 185 years. The church is known for its outreach work, educational programs, and long-standing presence in Mandeville’s religious life.

Founded in 1837 under the London Missionary Society, the church began as the Ridgemount Congregational Church before joining the UCJCI, which unites Congregational, Presbyterian, and Disciples of Christ traditions. Its theology is rooted in the Reformed tradition, emphasizing biblical integrity, discipleship, and community service.

The current minister, Reverend Anthony Chung, serves as the church’s 16th pastor and the fourth Jamaican-born leader. He has emphasized programs in counseling, conflict resolution, and digital literacy. Past leaders date back to early missionaries like William Slatyer and George Hall, reflecting the congregation’s long pastoral lineage.

Ridgemount United Church runs several social initiatives, including counseling services recognized by local courts, a computer lab supported by the Universal Service Fund and FLOW, and partnerships with institutions such as Mount Olivet Boys’ Home. Its affiliated primary and infant school in New Green underscores its investment in education and youth development.

Worship services are held on Sundays at 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., both in person and online. The church’s logo integrates symbols from its founding denominations—the cross, open Bible, chalice, burning bush, and sea—reflecting unity and shared faith across the Caribbean.
