Religious Services Service
University Methodist Church (Spanish: Iglesia Metodista Universitaria) is a longstanding Methodist congregation in the Río Piedras area of San Juan, Puerto Rico, located on Avenida Ponce de León near the University station of the Tren Urbano. It is notable for its deep ties to the Methodist tradition in Puerto Rico, its community outreach programs, and a history that dates back to the 1930s.
The congregation traces its origins to Methodist missionary work in Río Piedras beginning in 1934. The first Methodist worship service in the area was held in 1936, and the church formally developed over the following years. The current site on Avenida Ponce de León was acquired in 1946, and the present sanctuary was inaugurated in 1960 under the leadership of Rev. Rafael Boissén, whose long pastorate helped shape the church's growth and identity.
The church emphasizes a blend of traditional Methodist worship and contemporary expressions of faith. Services typically include preaching, congregational singing, choir music, and participation from both clergy and lay members. Ministries support children, youth, adults, and new members through Bible studies, educational programs, retreats, and spiritual formation activities.
