Ebenezer Methodist Church is one of the oldest Methodist congregations in The Bahamas, located on East Shirley Street in Nassau, New Providence. Its origins date back to 1802, when Rev. William Turton established a small wooden chapel known as the “East Chapel” to serve the growing Methodist community in the eastern part of Nassau. As the congregation expanded, the foundation for the present church building was laid in 1839, and the new sanctuary opened for worship in 1841.
Throughout its long history, the church has survived hurricanes, undergone numerous renovations, and played a significant role in the growth of Methodism in The Bahamas. It has been recognized for its contributions to Christian education, youth development, and community outreach. The church also helped establish other Methodist ministries, including early outreach efforts that contributed to the development of congregations elsewhere in New Providence.
Today, Ebenezer Methodist Church remains an active congregation within the Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church. It serves as a center for worship, fellowship, discipleship, and community service, while preserving a rich heritage that spans more than two centuries of Bahamian religious history.
